Yes. Several of my adult patients have experienced serious psychotic episodes while taking sedatives including triazolam (Halcion) and zolpidem (Ambien), which are also quite addictive.

FUTURE TREATMENTS FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER

There is a tremendous effort now to find new treatments for bipolar disorder, including medications that work in new ways and medical treatments that do not use drugs.

So what are some of these new medications?

Some of the medications that might help bipolar disorder include antalarmin (A8727), ketoconazole (Nizoral), aminoglutethimide (Cytadren), and metyrapone (Metopirone), which decrease the production of steroid stress hormones. Memantine (Namenda) regulates glutamate (GLU), which also helps reduce the body’s production of steroid stress hormones. Meridia (Provigil) increases histamine and choline, and is being tried in adults for treating the fatigue of bipolar depression. Triptorelin (Trelstar) reduces male hormone levels and may be helpful in reducing obsessive, aggressive, and hypersexual problems in boys.

I hope that some or all of these medications will soon be proven safe and effective for treating bipolar disorder in children. However, I am awaiting the results of ongoing research before recommending them at this time.
